At the Incident Response Forum D.C. 2026, held at The Mayflower Hotel, I had the opportunity to join a panel alongside leaders across legal, policy, and cybersecurity to discuss how the landscape continues to evolve.

What stood out most to me was the level of alignment across disciplines. The conversation reflected a shared understanding that cybersecurity is no longer confined to a single function. It now plays a central role in how organizations think about resilience, regulatory readiness, and long-term strategy.

The discussion was grounded, practical, and focused on how organizations can move forward with greater clarity.

AI Is Expanding Opportunity And Raising the Bar for Data Integrity

One of the areas I focused on during the panel was artificial intelligence.

There is tremendous momentum around AI adoption and for good reason. Organizations are leveraging it to improve efficiency, accelerate analysis, and enhance decision-making. At the same time, this evolution is raising the importance of protecting the data that underpins those systems.

As AI becomes more integrated into business processes, ensuring the integrity and reliability of data inputs becomes foundational. This is an opportunity for organizations to strengthen how they manage data pipelines, validate inputs, and build trust into their systems from the outset.

The conversation reflected a shift toward more mature AI strategies especially around ones that balance innovation with thoughtful security and governance.

Public and Private Sector Collaboration Is Strengthening

Another encouraging theme was the continued progress in collaboration between government and the private sector.

There is a growing recognition that effective cybersecurity requires coordination, shared visibility, and aligned action. Recent disruption efforts involving organizations like Microsoft and Google demonstrate what is possible when capabilities are brought together in a structured and deliberate way.

For organizations, this creates an opportunity to engage more actively in the broader security ecosystem by benefiting from shared intelligence, stronger partnerships, and more coordinated approaches to risk.

Compliance Is Becoming More Integrated and Strategic

The discussion around the Department of Justice’s Data Security Program highlighted how compliance is evolving in a positive direction.

Rather than being viewed as a standalone requirement, compliance is increasingly becoming part of a more integrated approach to managing data, security, and risk.

Organizations are moving toward operating models that bring together legal, cybersecurity, and risk functions in a more coordinated way. This “fusion” approach allows for better visibility, faster decision-making, and more consistent outcomes. It is a shift that ultimately strengthens both security posture and organizational resilience.

Data Strategy Is Becoming More Thoughtful and Globally Aware

As organizations operate across borders, there is a growing awareness of how different regulatory frameworks shape data management practices.

The conversation highlighted how companies are becoming more deliberate in how they handle data by considering not just protection, but also jurisdiction, access, and movement. This is leading to more sophisticated data strategies that account for global operations while maintaining strong governance and compliance standards.

For multinational organizations and investors, this represents a meaningful step forward in managing complexity with greater confidence.

Incident Response Is Evolving Toward Greater Coordination

Another positive development discussed was how organizations are approaching incident response. There is a clear trend toward more coordinated, cross-functional response models that bring together technical, legal, and executive leadership early in the process.

This alignment allows organizations to respond more effectively, maintain operational continuity, and communicate with clarity during high-pressure situations.

It also reflects a broader shift toward resilience through ensuring that organizations are not only prepared to respond, but to recover quickly and confidently.

Supporting Security Leadership at the Executive Level

The panel also reinforced the importance of supporting cybersecurity leadership within organizations. There is growing recognition that roles like the CISO are central to enterprise risk management and require strong alignment with executive leadership, legal teams, and the board.

Organizations are increasingly investing in that alignment by ensuring that security leaders have the visibility, resources, and support needed to navigate a complex environment. This is a positive shift that strengthens decision-making and reinforces accountability across the organization.

Final Thought

What made this discussion particularly valuable was not just the focus on progress, but the recognition that the challenges in front of us are real, evolving, and not going away. Across AI, compliance, data strategy, and incident response, the environment is becoming more complex, more interconnected, and more demanding for organizations at every level. What gives confidence is the momentum toward greater alignment across industries, across functions, and increasingly between the public and private sectors. Cybersecurity is now firmly embedded in how organizations operate and grow, and no single entity can address these challenges alone. The organizations that will be best positioned moving forward are those that lean into collaboration, invest in shared intelligence, and build resilience as a collective effort.
